This is really terrible.Mon, 29/09/2014 - 16:03 by Becca Day-Preston
Celebrity relationships are interesting. If they weren’t, websites like this wouldn’t exist. It’s totally normal to be interested in who’s doing whom in the celeb sphere, because they’re largely an attractive and interesting bunch. It’s not normal, or polite, or acceptable, though, to personally and racially attack someone just because they’re rumoured to be dating someone whose last serious relationship you had somehow invested in, emotionally.
But that’s what’s happening right now as a depressingly large number of weirdos take to Twitter to spout racial abuse about, and directly at, FKA Twigs, the Mercury-nominated musician who is believed to be dating Robert Pattinson from those Twilight films.
By and large, it seems like a lot of the abuse is coming from Robsten ‘shippers. Sorry if you’re over 13 and you don’t know what either of those words mean. Basically, they’re people who think that despite clearly coming to have next to zero interest in each other or the franchise they were presumably sick of marketing, Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart were the ultimate couple. They belong together because they went out for a bit and then found themselves trapped in a marriage of promotional convenience. It’s bad enough that FKA Twigs has the temerity to come between them, but it seems like it’s even worse that she’s a woman of colour, at least to these delightful racists:
We often think it’s awesome how social media connects us to famous people, until bullshit like this happens. These racist screeds are, as you can see, directed at FKA Twigs’s personal account. Imagine thinking so much of a two-years-dead relationship that you would directly address someone and racially abuse them. That’s weird and sad.
After a week of this kind of abuse, FKA Twigs issued this short statement on Twitter:
People have responded to that with racism. Because of course they have.
Well done, everyone.
Here’s a FKA Twigs song, by the way. She’s right good.VIDEO
